lawzmag.comWhat’s the harm if BMC makes Suryanamaskarcompulsory in its schools, asked the Bombay high court . A bench of Chief Justice Manjula Chellur and Justice Mahesh Sonak reacted initially when a PIL was mentioned for fixing a hearing date. The petitioner, former corporator from Kurla Masood Ansari, urged the court to quash the resolution passed by the BMC on August 23, making yoga and Suryanamaskar compulsory in civic schools.

Masood’s petition said the students are minors. “Further, they mainly belong to poorer sections of society coming from all religions, communities, castes and creed,” it said, adding that the proposal violates their fundamental rights.

His advocate Anjali Awasthi argued that Suryanamaskar is to be performed on an empty stomach. “Children have breakfast before going to school. Therefore, it will not be proper for them to perform Suryanamaskar during morning prayers.”Justice Chellur said that there are various kinds of Suryanamaskar and it remains to be seen which is selected by the BMC.
